Spring Programs in Town of Scranton

Like most towns, Scranton offers a variety of recreation, education and enrichment programs. These programs are not offered through the university – they are Town programs.

Searching the Catalogue

Spring Programs in the Town’s website do not (unfortunately) have permalinks, so I cannot give you the exact link to any one program (like guitar or pottery).

Just go to the home page of Activities & Facilities (an unfortunate name) and choose from a side-menu of options. Or, use the advanced search (link in the upper left) and enter a keyword such as “guitar.” Got it?

Beginner Guitar Lessons

It’s never to late to learn something new. For no fee, anybody 12 or over can take beginning guitar lessons from a licensed educator with twenty years of teaching experience. You can learn fundamental techniques and concepts that will help you piece things together on your own later. Music is all about expressing yourself, and you could be the next Jimi Hendrix. Lessons meet Tuesdays at 6:45-7:45 PM February 4, 2014 through March 25, 2014 at the Scranton Community Center.

Study Hall

Know anybody struggling in school? Students 11-19 can receive free homework help from tutors at Hargraves Center Park. The tutors can prepare students for tests and help them develop writing skills in a safe environment. There are snacks provided, and it looks like this program conveniently runs for most of the semester. It meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-8 PM January 28,2014 through May 15, 2014.

Wheel Throwing

No matter your skill level, this fun program allows you to create pots, bowls, plates, and cups. When I think of the spring, Mother’s Day and the flower pots I used to paint as a child always come to mind. Ages 14 and up can participate in this activity for between $135-$185 and come home with something both creative and useful. This program runs February 3, 2014 through March 26, 2014 on Monday nights from 6:30-9 PM. The same program runs on Wednesdays and Saturdays too, but the dates vary.

Red Cross Certification

Safety matters. Knowing what to recognize and how to respond gives you peace of mind, not to mention can make the difference between life and death. Anyone 14 and over can learn these skills and get certified for a fee of $18-$22. Classes meet Thursday, April 24, 2014 from 6-9 PM and Friday, March 28, 2014 from 2-5 PM at Homestead Aquatic Center. The certification will be valid for two years after the course.

Registration for programs begins 8:30 AM on January 6,2014 for Scranton and Orange County residents, and January 20 for all non-residents. There are plenty of programs available, so feel free to take a look at what’s being offered. As for me, all this talk about activities makes me sleepy, and I think I hear my bed calling my name.

Happy sleeping,
